As an anual trip, art teacher Sharon Scharf takes students to The Big Fresno Fair to compete in the chalk-drawing competition, Oct. 9. This year three teams from FC will design boards to correlate with the theme "Passport to Fun."

Each year, students participate in The Big Fresno Fair's chalk-drawing contest and the Caruthers District Fair's animal competitions. Students from various schools within the county must create a chalk-drawing that goes along with the chosen theme, "Passport to Fun," Oct. 9. Meanwhile, students who submit their animals must wait to be judged at Caruthers's fair.

This year three groups from FC will participate in this event. Stephanie Peck, '13, Kevin Thao, '13, Joshua Thao, '14, and Daniel Thao, '16. Katie Barisic, '13, and Jessica Healey, '13, will work alone.

Students start their chalk-drawings at 8 a.m. and must finish by 2 p.m.. They are given a black board and may bring a prepared design to reference while they are drawing.

Art teacher Sharon Scharf has been arranging this event with her students for about 15 years. She believes that everyone will have fun while at the event.

"It's a fun day," Scharf said. "It's high stressed because your trying to get things done so fast. One of the important things is that we're representing our school, and getting our {students} names out there. It's a good experience to work under pressure, you have to finish before the time limit, when they start judging."

"Since there are four of us, we will definitely make it back to see the queen pageant. We just need to make our design for the chalk-drawing, and give each member their part in the job. We'll breeze through it." --Kevin Thao, 13,

As the only freshman, Daniel is excited to go as it will be his first time attending the event.

"I wonder how it will turn out," Daniel said. " I hope that It'll be fun, and that we'll have a good time. Although I don't know what we {his team} are drawing, but I know that we will do well."

Since the students participating in the event will not be at school, they may miss the opportunity to watch the Queen Pageant also held on that day. Kevin believes that his group will finish and make it back on time to watch the queen pageant.

Along with the anual chalk-drawing competition, campus students also enter in animals in the 4-H program. Sixth graders Seth and Ryan Freitas will enter their steers into the Caruthers District Fair.

"Since there are four of us, we will definitely make it back to see the queen pageant," Kevin said. "We just need to make our design for the chalk-drawing, and give each member their part in the job. We'll breeze through it."

Students will also be submitting animals to the Caruthers District Fair. Sixth graders Seth and Ryan Freitas have been submitting their steers for three years.

"We've been submitting steers for three years," Seth said. "Our dad helps us [with the cattle]. My favorite ones are the crossbreds."

However, some people will not be participating in the event this year. David Taylor, '14, usually submits his rabbits on which he tends to as a hobby, but this year, he has decided not to enter.

"I don't think that I'll enter my rabbit in the fair anymore," Taylor said. "I've been very busy lately with school work. Taking care of my rabbit would distract me from schoolwork."

Fresno Christian High School entries were absolutely stunning! If I were the judge, all of you would have won!

Amazing

The detail people can accomplish with chalk never ceases to amaze me! Definitely one of the best parts of the fair.
