Once again it is time for the yearly Book Buddies club to take sign ups again. FC has participated in this program for about 16 years. The club allows high school students to get involved with the community and become a Christian example by spending their lunch and chapel time reading to students at Pinedale Elementary School every other Thursday. The first training for those interested in Book Buddies will be held in room 604, Oct. 8.

Senior Brianna Walker is excited to participate in Book Buddies this year because of the positive relationships that are built between the kindergarden students.

"I am participating in Book Buddies because I want to be a positive role-model for younger kids," Walker said. "I think it's a great way to reach out to the community and be a good part of someones life."

The program, in its 16th year, encourages high school students to teach and read to children at Pinedale Elementary. This year, 44 students volunteered for the program.

Volunteer coordinator Linda Amparano says literacy is an important factor for children to be successful in school, which inspired her to start the program.

"I think its really important for high school students to get involved in the community and its a great way to impact the life of a young child. The students always know when Fresno Christian students come to Pinedale, they look up to you guys {FC students} so much." --Linda Amparano, volunteer coordinator

Senior, Kaelene Presson, is unable to participate due to a full schedule. However, she wishes she had the time to sign up.

"I would love to do Book Buddies," Presson said. "But being a senior, I really need to be focused on classes and grades. I wish them the best luck and hope they have fun."

Office Secretary, Brenda Warkentin is one of the main coordinators for Book Buddies this year.

"This year was a good turnout of 44 students that had signed up to participate in Book Buddies," Warkentin said. "The first meeting is Monday the 8th {of October}, and I hope to see everyone there."

The meeting is basic training for the Buddies. The teachers stress how important it is to show up to every reading with the younger child, because it means so much to them.

"Not only do you build a relationship with the child, but it's awesome to have a Christian pour into their life with Jesus's love," Amparano said. "It helps the child emotionally and become a better reader."

For more information, talk to Warkentin in the high school office or email her.
