Editorial policies
Feather's mission
The Feather, the online student newspaper of Fresno Christian High School, is an open, public forum for student expression and an opportunity to discuss its audience's issues of concern. Opinions expressed are those of the writer and do not necessarily reflect the position of the school board, administration, sponsors, parents, student body or advertisers.
The Editorial Board, which consists of the editor-in-chief, section editors, assistant editors and webmaster, will determine the content of The Feather Online.
Student journalists on The Feather staff will make every effort to publish following the legal definitions of libel, obscenity and invasion of privacy. Consistent with California Education Code section 48907, the staff also will refrain from printing material that may incite students, be a violation of school regulations or disrupt school operations. At the beginning of each semester, journalism students will be reminded of the legal, financial and ethical implications of each article they write.
The adviser of The Feather will supervise production and offer advice and instruction to help the staff meet professional standards of English and journalism, and to maintain the provisions as required by the California Education Code section 48907.
Ethical concerns
The Feather staff will work toward meeting the standards set by professional journalism developed by the Journalism Education Association. This includes, but it is not limited to, a code of ethics concerning accuracy, advertising, conflict of interest, credibility, freedom of the press, impartiality, integrity, obstruction of justice, personal privacy, responsibility and sensationalism.
The Feather staff will not alter the content of news photographs through technical or other means. Image enhancements for technical clarity are permissible. The staff will not recreate events or photographs.
Editorial guidelines
The Feather staff welcomes and encourages submitted letters, stories, cartoons and/or any other student feedback to the editor. Please send all submissions to Mr. Stobbe's box in the office by posted deadline. Letters can also be e-mailed to thefeather@fresnochristian.com. Letters sent via e-mail may need to be verified by student signature before publishing.
The following rules apply to all letters to the editor and user comments:
• All accepted material will be printed as is, excepting in the case of obscenities, libelous material, length and/or personal attack. The Feather adviser and/or editors have the right to deny publication of any editorial, column, review or comment.
• Minor grammar and/or spelling corrections will be made; however, the content will not be altered.
• All material MUST BE SIGNED, though upon written request, the author's name may be withheld.
All editorials, columns, reviews or commentary are strictly the opinion of the writer and may not represent opinions held by the school board, administration, sponsors, parents, student body or advertisers.
In accordance with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act, only feedback from visitors over 13 years of age will be published. The Feather Online is not liable for dishonestly supplying this information.
