The Nest, Part I

Apr 25

This is Part I of fifth grade student Seth Frietas’s introduction blog, The Nest.

Hello everybody and welcome to the grand opening of the elementary blog, The Nest.

In relation to the high school newspaper, The Feather, this blog is meant for the elementary students. The Nest is meant to keep up with the news that goes on in the K-6 grades. It also provides some more activity than our teachers’ weekly newsletters and the student council weekly news videos!

Now that we are all set and up to date, how about we talk about some of the exciting events this week!

Let’s get to our Math Field Day results from Saturday, April 21! Mr. [Michael] Fenton, the high school math teacher, brought 90 students from Fresno Christian to compete in the yearly event known as, Math Field Day! Math Field Day consists of schools from all around the county coming to Fresno State to compete in three different events, which involve certain academic, mathematical skills such as Algebra, Strategy, and answering questions in a Rapid Fire action.

One event is “Leap Frog,” a game requiring a tag-team of two and answering algebraic questions, exchanging those questions with your partner to see if you were correct or incorrect. Another event is “Mad Hatter,” a game involving a speed of answering math questions in a fast order.

Last, but not least, “The Game Tournament,” an event where one competes against a random opponent, sliding pennies across the board. The one with the last movement of the penny wins the game.

For the grades 6-8 Game Tournament, these are the elementary students who competed: Erin Baudonnet, Ryan Freitas, Seth Freitas, Mark Hembree, Ronnie Peterson, A.J. Tagget, and Sebastian Rodriquez. A few made it to the second round, and one came out third place overall: Seth Freitas. All of these students were fifth grade except for Erin Baudonnet.

Congratulations to everyone who competed and I hope you and other students can come back next year for, Math Field Day!

See “The Nest, Part II” for the rest of my recap of Math Field Day, and some more announcements!

    Great Job Seth

  9. Math is useful in life. It is good to enjoy it. I have to use it as a nurse to make sure I do not give too much or too little medication. Best wishes from Adelaide, Australia.
