Fresno City College journalism instructor Kathleen Schock introduces the conference, Oct. 25.

The Feather team took in the 4th annual High School Journalism Conference at Fresno City College (FCC), Oct. 25. Along with the 15 Feather members, about 175 students from Fresno, Madera, Tulare, and Kings counties gathered at the FCC Old Administration Building.

Seven high schools sat in workshops to listen and learn from local news reporters, broadcasters, radio personalities and professional photographers about the importance of news and media.

Students attended various sessions from experienced industry professionals. Instructors included Corin Hoggard, Vanessa Vasconcelos both from ABC30 News, photographer Diana Baldrica, KSEE/KGPE News director Lisa Burger and many more. The Feather staff took numerous opportunities to interview presenters as well as operate news cameras.

Editor and chief Addison Schultz has attended the Fresno City College Journalism Day last year  and appreciates learning from media professionals.

“I think it i important for students to attend because it gives them an opportunity to network with professionals who are actively writing news in the Valley,” Schultz said. “It give us as students the chance to get out of our comfort zones a little bit and interview other high school journalists and professors. I always learn something new and take away something from this event.”

This conference hopes to continue the growth of the journalism industry through young high school students in the greater Fresno area. They receive first-hand knowledge from someone who has professional experience, providing tips on how to improve. This gives students the chance to see what interests them and if they want to go into that field.
