Girls varsity soccer head coach, Matthew Markarian, wins his first Valley Championship during his 25th year of coaching, Feb. 21.
Markarian had coached the boys soccer team for 22 years but decided to switch to the girls team in 2017. Ever since Markarian began coaching the girls team, they have gone to the Valley Championships three years in a row.
In the 2017-18 season, the girls soccer team had the home advantage for their Division 6 Championship game against Rosamond High School. They fell short of receiving the ‘Valley Champions’ title by one goal and received the runner-up trophy.
In the 2018-19 season, the team traveled to Arvin High School to play in another Division 6 Valley Championship game. With the game continuing into overtime, the Eagles fell short again of a Valley Championship, receiving another runner-up trophy.
For his 25th year for coaching soccer, Markarian pushed and prepared the team to win a Valley Championship after getting moved up into Division 5. The team claimed the No. 1 seed for playoffs and advanced all the way to the Championships. The Eagles had the home advantage against the No.2 seed, Kerman High School. After a long battle, the Eagles were victorious, defeating Kerman, 2-1, and claiming the ‘Valley Champions’ title.
Markarian shares his favorite part of this years team and how he felt after winning his first valley championship.
“My favorite part about this team is how much fun this team has,” Markarian said. “We compete like crazy but we also know when to have fun. When we won the Valley Championship it was amazing but the best part is that I got to do it with my brother, Garrett Markarian, Morgan and the most amazing group of players anyone could ask for. The wait was painful but it was worth it for sure.”
Congratulations to the girls soccer team and Markarian for winning Division 5 Central Section Valley Champions!
