Varsity volunteers donate time, raise funds

With courts exceeding 110 degrees, tennis players volunteer to help the younger generations develop fundamentals as well as a passion for the sport.

The third annual tennis camp will be held from 8:30-11:00 A.M. on June 11-15. The program is geared towards children ages nine to sixteen.

George Freeman, girls’ tennis coach of 22 years, will run the camp with the aid of alumnus player, Chris Schultz.

“I started the summer program to encourage as many kids as possible to get interested in tennis,” Freeman said. “I want children to realize what a great sport it is. Tennis requires the strategy of a chess player, agility of a basketball player, endurance of a long distance runner and the quickness of a track star. All this is wrapped up in one sport.”

Several young students have made a commitment to the yearly camp. Christopher Grossman, ’15, has participated the last four years.

“Tennis camp is fun because it is totally different than the sports during the school year,” Grossman said. “My favorite part is tennis baseball, which is baseball played with a racquet and tennis ball. It helps me develop my skills and combines some of my favorite sports.”

The girls on the high school team will help out during the weeklong event.

?I am going to tennis camp because I want to help out younger students and help them learn to play well,? Megan Ortiz, ?09, said. ?The current players need to pass on the campus tradition of good tennis and it?s important to encourage them to play well.?

The camp also helps diminish costs for the high school girls’ team, such as uniforms and a tennis ball machine.

“Besides passing on the great tradition of FC tennis, I want to help out at camp to raise money for our team,” Kara Linkowski, ’08, said. “There are a lot of costs, and this is a fun way to fundraise.”

The cost of the camp is $90, and participants are asked to bring a racquet and a water bottle. Registration forms can be picked up at any office on campus.

I had so much fun cheering at the game with all the bandos! We all painted our faces (unfortuatel, we used poster paint, which was slightly painful later on) and cheered a lot! It was awesome to have a lot of students there supporting the team!

Great job to the girls’ basketball team! You guys are amazing!
