This is the 26th episode of “FC Underground, 2016-’17,” covering the week of Mar. 20 – Mar. 24, 2017. Seniors Trevor Trevino (replaced by Julian Castro in this episode) and Jennifer King were selected to be the new hosts for the 2016-’17 school year.
Although awards for the CSPA Crown Winners were scheduled to be given on Friday, there was still much to do before that point. Beginning on an early metro ride to Columbia, Editor-in-Chiefs Phillip Christopher and Jennifer King along with Senior Editor Nick Leblanc and advisor Greg Stobbe departed from the hotel to prepare for their first session to begin at 8:45 a.m.
Despite the late night most Feather staffers spent working, video journalists woke earlier than the rest of the group to prepare a presentation. For the second consecutive day, Feather staffers took the subway trip to Columbia University for the NSPA Spring Convention.
World-renown photographer Peter Hurley experienced this first-hand while he was working as a bartender, Olympian and as a model at a young age. The Feather staff visited his studio on Hurley's invitation, March 15. He shared his personal and photography experiences and gave professional tips to the young staff. With an email and some organization of details, The Feather was privileged with a personal interview in Hurley's Manhattan studio. While working as a bartender, often until 4 a.m., this lifestyle neither supplied much purpose or revenue that Hurley desired. On the side, he was also a model for designer apparel like Abercrombie & Fitch. However, Hurley didn’t feel that this career would last forever.
The icy temperatures and frigid winds left over from yesterday’s blizzard didn’t stop Feather students from hopping onto the NY Metro and trudging through slush to get to Columbia University, to attend the Columbia Scholastic Press Association Convention.
Snowflakes fell from the sky as the well-rested students awoke from their deep sleep. Due to the blizzard that was approaching New York City, many of the activities planned for The Feather staff’s day was canceled.
On day 2 of our NYC trip, the Feather staff visited National September 11 Memorial and Museum, One World Observatory, along with Wall Street and Federal Hall. The day ended with watching the Madison Square Garden Rangers Game. The New York Rangers were defeated, 3-2, against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Schools and community volunteers in Central Valley gather together and sell newspapers to annually raise money for Valley Children’s Hospital, March 7. Fresno Christian high school leadership and Feather staff sell newspapers for the 30th annual Kids Day.
